Since I've last posted there've been two panel reviews of my on-going thesis previzualization work. The first one was a faculty panel - that was a disaster and hence caused me to scrap the original premise. I felt the premise was too forced and overly complicated. Plus the concept went over the panel's heads but I take blame for that as it was a failure to communicate (and my original animatic too confusing.)
The Industry review that just took place last fri. happened much more smoothly and the new slimmer premise went over well without confusion. The panelists from Blue Sky and Guava gave helpful technical tips as well as making me aware of the "value" or payoff of a shot vs. cost of time and work for the shot.
Here's a list of some of the things they pointed out:
- modeling the islands modularly to easily make a variety of tortoises.
- compositing actual footage for waterfalls, and splashes and wake effects in water. ("Walking of Dinosaurs" by Framestore.)
- having clouds and mist also "hide" defects...
- highlight interface between organic tortoise material and inorganic island rock, terrain, etc.
- build a library of clouds and mists for use in layering.
